1 (a) What is Zakat in Islam?

1 (b) Explain three reasons why Muslims pay Zakat
i. Zakat purifies a Muslim's wealth by setting aside a portion for those less fortunate.
ii. It helps reduce poverty and inequality by redistributing wealth within the community.
iii. Religious Duty: Paying Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and fulfilling it is a demonstration of a Muslim's faith and obedience to God.

3 (a) Narrate the Encounter Between Yusuf and His Master's Wife in Egypt (Surah 12:21-35)
In Surah Yusuf (Surah 12:21-35), the story narrates the trial of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) with the wife of his master, Al-Aziz. Yusuf was a handsome and pious young man serving in the household of Al-Aziz in Egypt. His master's wife attempted to seduce him due to his striking good looks. Despite her persistent advances, Yusuf remained steadfast and rejected her, seeking refuge in God from committing any sin.
One day, when they were alone in the house, she tried to force herself upon him, but he fled, running towards the door. She grabbed his shirt from behind, tearing it as he escaped. At that moment, they encountered Al-Aziz at the door. The master's wife immediately accused Yusuf of attempting to harm her. However, a witness (one of the household members) suggested checking Yusuf's shirt to determine the truth: if it was torn from the front, he would be guilty; if torn from the back, she would be lying. The shirt was found torn from the back, proving Yusuf's innocence. Al-Aziz rebuked his wife for her deceit and asked Yusuf to keep the incident private.
Despite his innocence, rumors spread among the women of the city about the incident. The master's wife, in an attempt to clear her name, invited these women to a banquet and gave them knives. When Yusuf entered the room, they were so taken by his beauty that they accidentally cut their hands. She admitted her infatuation with Yusuf and reiterated her threat. Yusuf prayed to God to protect him, and as a result, he was imprisoned despite his innocence, as a way to avoid further scandal.
3 (b) Give Two Lessons Learnt from the Story in 3a
Steadfastness in Faith: Yusuf's unwavering commitment to his faith and refusal to succumb to temptation exemplifies the importance of remaining steadfast in one's principles and seeking refuge in God during trials.
The Importance of Truth and Justice: The story highlights the significance of truth and justice. Despite the false accusation, the truth about Yusuf's innocence was revealed, showing that integrity and righteousness ultimately prevail.
4(a) Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by God to believers to help them serve others and build up the church.
4(b) Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to prove who was the true God. They each prepared a bull for sacrifice and called on their god to set it on fire. The Baal worshippers prayed all day, but nothing happened. Elijah then prayed to God, who sent fire from heaven to burn the sacrifice. This showed that God was real and powerful, and the people turned back to Him.
4(c) Lesson: True faith in God will always be rewarded, and He has the power to do what no other can.
5B) Account of jesus raising lazarus from the dead
In the Bible, the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is found in the Gospel of John, Chapter 11. Lazarus, along with his sisters Mary and Martha, lived in Bethany, a village near Jerusalem. They were close friends of Jesus. One day, Lazarus became very sick. Mary and Martha sent a message to Jesus, saying, "Lord, the one you love is sick."
When Jesus received the message, He said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, but He stayed where He was for two more days before deciding to go to Bethany.
When Jesus arrived in Bethany, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Martha went out to meet Jesus and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."
Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" Martha replied, "Yes, Lord. I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."
Mary also came to Jesus, and when she saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. Jesus asked, "Where have you laid him?" They replied, "Come and see, Lord." Then Jesus wept. The people noticed how much Jesus loved Lazarus.
Jesus went to the tomb, which was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. He said, "Take away the stone." Martha objected, "But, Lord, by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." Jesus responded, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"
So they took away the stone. Jesus looked up and prayed, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"
Lazarus came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."
